Men’s Health Month was created in 1992 to raise awareness of the importance of proper screenings, early detection, and obtaining regular medical advice for men and to encourage young men to implement self-care and a healthy lifestyle. Studies show a significant difference between the health of men and the health of women, as men are less likely to seek treatment for preventable diseases.
I feel there are barriers to men seeking treatment. Some men may not seek medical treatment as they may see it as being weak and less masculine. They may downplay their symptoms and endure pain to appear “more manly.” Men may also forgo medical treatment for financial reasons. They may not be able to take time off work to go to needed appointments or they may choose between treatment for their family versus treatment for themselves.
There are many simple changes that men can make to create a healthier lifestyle. Watching what they eat and how they eat is one-way men can make a change. They can also add in simple exercises to their daily routine, something as simple as going for a walk in the evenings. Another simple change would be to get the appropriate amount of sleep every night.
Men can decrease their risk for serious diseases by being more physically active, eating healthier, and reducing their stress and alcohol intake. Men should also see their primary physician to be screened and tested regularly.
At Cedar Trails Senior Living Freeburg, IL, we take the health and well-being of our male residents, whether in Independent Living, Assisted Living, or Memory Care, very seriously.
Healthy lifestyles and self-care for most men start only when needed. Preventative screenings, along with regular checkups while younger, can help lead to a healthier, richer, and more enjoyable life in the later years for men.
