As the story goes, the abundance of coal and fertile farmland led to a German migration so large the city fathers changed the town name to Freeburg in a nod to Freiburg, Germany, a picturesque city along the Black Forest. In our own nod to the town’s heritage, Essen is the German word meaning “to eat,” so guten appetit!
