Choosing a “Word of the Year” is more than a fun tradition. At Cedar Trails Senior Living, it is a powerful tool for focus and growth. A single word can guide decisions, inspire action, and unite teams around a shared purpose. Reflecting on the word selected for the year helps reveal how it shaped culture, strengthened connections, and supported meaningful experiences for residents and staff. This end-of-year review allows space to celebrate successes, learn from challenges, and prepare for continued progress ahead.
Our Word of the Year was Focus, and it shaped our approach to daily operations and resident care. When I became Executive Director in March, our community faced several challenges with a small team navigating them. Guided by Focus, we slowed down, set priorities, and addressed each issue one step at a time.
This approach helped every department stay aligned and complete tasks thoroughly. It also prevented overwhelm. By working methodically, we resolved long-standing concerns while staying centered on what matters most: consistent, high-quality care and meaningful engagement for our residents.
The most valuable lesson I will carry forward is the importance of slowing down to focus on what truly matters. Taking things one step at a time leads to better decisions and stronger support for the team. Ultimately, it strengthens the care and experiences we provide every day.
This insight will continue guiding our goals. Clear priorities help us address challenges with intention rather than urgency. Moving forward, we will keep building a culture where thoughtful focus leads to steady, meaningful progress.
