Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Lori Peterson, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. While there is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships, there can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections, offer encouragement, and provide the kind of peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one. Their willingness to reach out, share their experiences, and invite others into community life helps turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at Cedar Trails, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make in helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Helping Residents Know What to Expect

A successful move-in experience begins when new residents know they have people they can turn to with questions. That means helping residents understand what to expect, making sure they have their calendar, and giving them familiar points of contact as they settle into their new home.

Those first details matter. A calendar can help a new resident begin to see the rhythm of daily life, while introductions help them understand who is available to support them. Together, these small steps can make the move-in process feel less confusing and more welcoming.

Because Cedar Trails is a smaller community, residents often begin recognizing one another quickly. That close-knit feeling helps new residents find their footing, meet neighbors, and start branching out at their own pace. Resident Ambassadors support that process by offering a friendly welcome and helping new neighbors feel included.

A Smiling Face Makes a Difference

Some of the most meaningful welcomes are simple. A smile, a kind check-in, or an offer to answer questions can help a new resident feel less alone. Ambassadors and neighbors help welcome new residents by introducing them around the community and giving them space to become comfortable.

One meaningful example involved a resident who was upset after moving in. Others made it a point to check on her, answer questions, and simply be a smiling face. That kind of steady, gentle support can make a major transition feel more manageable.

Residents may respond quickly to other residents because the connection feels familiar and genuine. A peer can offer reassurance from personal experience. They may not have every answer, but they understand what it feels like to move into a new community, meet new people, and adjust to a different routine.

Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of the community by being friendly, approachable, and present. They are familiar faces new residents may come to know and trust. Their kindness helps create a community where people feel supported not only by staff, but also by neighbors who care.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents—they help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days, but the relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
