First Impressions: Creating a Welcoming Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Mark Murphy, Plant Operations Director

First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.

As Plant Operations Director at Cedar Trails Senior Living, I believe first impressions show how much we care about our community, both inside and out. The condition of our building and grounds reflects the pride we take in our work and the attention we give to the people who live here.

When residents, families, and visitors arrive, I want them to see a clean, attractive, and welcoming environment. Maintaining those standards helps everyone feel comfortable and confident in their surroundings.

Staying Ahead of Maintenance Through Weekly Routines

For me, being truly tour-ready means our community is consistently clean, attractive, and well-maintained. We should not have to wait for a scheduled tour to address something that needs attention.

Instead, I believe in identifying concerns early and taking care of them before they become larger problems.

At Cedar Trails, every Tuesday is dedicated to paint touch-ups throughout the building. This gives us a regular opportunity to address scuffed walls, chipped paint, and other appearance concerns.

By keeping Touch-Up Tuesday on the schedule, we can maintain the building’s appearance rather than allowing smaller issues to accumulate.

Landscaping is another important part of making our community feel welcoming. Healthy grass, colorful flowers, and attractive outdoor spaces all contribute to the impression people form when they arrive.

I work closely with our landscaping provider, and we walk the grounds together each week.

During these walkthroughs, we look for concerns such as browning grass, dead flowers, and areas where the lawn needs attention.

We also discuss a plan for addressing those concerns and keeping the property looking fresh and well-maintained.

Having these regular conversations helps us stay on the same page and work toward the appearance we want for our community.

Lighting also plays an important role in first impressions. A well-lit building and attractive outdoor spaces help create a welcoming atmosphere, especially in the evening.

Good lighting improves visibility around streets, parking areas, and entrances. It also supports safety and security for residents, visitors, and team members.

I believe lighting should complement the appearance of our community while helping everyone feel comfortable moving around the property.

Together, these maintenance routines help us create an environment that looks cared for throughout the year.

Creating a Courtyard Residents Love

One of our most meaningful First Impressions successes at Cedar Trails Senior Living has been updating our courtyard.

Our residents enjoy spending time outside, especially when family members come to visit. I wanted the courtyard to be a place where they could relax and feel comfortable together.

The courtyard received an upgrade, giving residents a refreshed outdoor space to enjoy.

It has been especially rewarding to hear how much residents appreciate the improvement. They enjoy sitting outside with their families and have shared how pleased they are with the updated area.

For me, that feedback is what makes the project successful. The courtyard looks better, but more importantly, it is a space residents genuinely enjoy using.

Outdoor gathering areas are an important part of our community. They give residents opportunities to spend time with loved ones, enjoy fresh air, and make memories together.

This is something other Plant Operations Directors can consider at their communities. Look at the outdoor spaces residents already use and identify opportunities to improve their appearance and comfort.

A courtyard does not necessarily need a complete redesign to feel more inviting. Thoughtful improvements to landscaping, cleanliness, or other existing features can help make a space more enjoyable.

It also helps to pay attention to how residents use these areas and what they appreciate most about them.

For me, first impressions are about more than making a building look nice for visitors. They are about maintaining a community where residents feel proud of their home and enjoy spending time.

Our courtyard improvement is a reminder that the work we do can have a meaningful impact on everyday life.

By staying proactive with maintenance and continuing to improve our surroundings, we help ensure Cedar Trails Senior Living remains a welcoming place residents are happy to call home.
