Building Connection Through Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Lori Peterson, Resident Services Director

As Resident Services Director at Cedar Trails Senior Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living. It turns a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just helpful — it is essential for well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating a Community of Care and Belonging

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It also means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, each moment strengthens relationships and helps residents feel like they belong.

From my perspective, every interaction becomes an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully. They also experience the emotional and social comfort that comes with genuine human connection.

To me, community in senior living means looking after one another. It means sharing in life’s joys, triumphs, heartbreaks, and losses. We become like family, caring deeply for each other through every season of life.

Building these connections is essential because many residents are navigating a new chapter filled with change or uncertainty. Our goal is to meet them where they are and honor who they are today. Through empathy, understanding, and acceptance, we create a place where each person feels valued and supported.

I encourage residents to connect by building bridges between shared interests. If someone enjoys playing cards, I introduce them to others who do as well. These simple interactions often lead to unexpected friendships — the kind that bring real joy to our community.

Strengthening Bonds Within Cedar Trails and Beyond

We also stay connected with our small town by forming relationships with local groups and organizations. One of our favorite visits comes from the local FFA students. They drive their tractors to our community and talk with residents about farming. These conversations spark nostalgia and open the door to meaningful stories.

One of my favorite ways to bring people together is through music. Residents light up when they sing along, clap their hands, or reminisce through songs ranging from hymns to country favorites to golden oldies. Music has a special way of bringing hearts together.

To welcome new residents, I greet them by name each day and invite them to events. I also remind them that it’s okay to participate at their own pace. Over time, those early introductions grow into friendships and shared meals — beautiful reminders that joy and connection are always possible.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful moment enriches daily life. As Resident Services Director at Cedar Trails Senior Living, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these relationships transform our building into a true home and create moments that residents and families treasure.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we do more than plan events — we build a vibrant and supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
