Cedar Trails Senior Living Concentrates on Alzheimer’s Awareness

Category: Memory Care

Author: Brianna Wilson, Memory Care Director

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month, bringing the plight of those facing the diagnosis, and the need for a cure, to the forefront. Today, there are more than 6.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s Disease, and while research continues, a cure is yet to be identified. Arrow Senior Living is working to heighten awareness of Alzheimer’s disease during the month of November through discussion and education.

Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common type of dementia. It’s a progressive disease that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s; however, there are medications that can temporarily lessen the severity of the symptoms.

There are several ways to engage a person with Alzheimer’s disease. Approaching them from the front with a smile and positive attitude is very important. Speaking to them in a quiet, friendly tone and allowing them time to process and respond helps to keep the person from getting overwhelmed. It is also helpful to get to know them. Understanding and appreciating their past interests will help guide you to great conversation and possible activities to enjoy.

A person with Alzheimer’s would greatly benefit from living in our Memory Care Neighborhood because our staff has been trained to enrich their everyday life. They receive special person-centered care and can participate in activities that are catered to them. Our Memory Care Neighborhoods feel strongly that acts of kindness drive change in the world. In our Neighborhood we defend the dignity of others.

At Cedar Trails Senior Living we continue to increase our knowledge of Alzheimer’s through ongoing education, so we can better empower those living with the disease and help their families to better cope. Our Memory Care Neighborhoods maintain awareness of this disease, while offering engagement, safety, and comfort to our residents.
